Capri Sandals: A Walk Through Fashion History

Few pieces of footwear evoke the same sense of timeless glamour and effortless sophistication as Capri sandals. The Capri sandal is more than an iconic piece of footwear; it’s a timeless symbol of Italian style, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. In this article, we’ll explore the fascinating history of Capri sandals, tracing their roots along the cobblestone streets of Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

When Jackie Onassis and Grace Kelly wore these custom-made sandals in the 1960s and 70s, they weren’t just immersing themselves in an ancient Italian tradition—they were bringing attention to the beauty of Italian sandal making, elevating these once-local creations to a global symbol of refined elegance. Their influence helped establish Capri sandals as a hallmark of timeless style and Italian artistry.

The distinct design of these sandals became a blueprint for luxury brands worldwide seeking to capture the essence of effortless sophistication. Unmatched in their customization, exquisite quality, and dedication to craftsmanship, Capri sandals continue to captivate luxury travelers and fashion lovers alike. More than just luxury footwear, they represent the mastery and tradition of Italian artisans, solidifying their place as an enduring piece of fashion history.

Discovering the Magic of Handmade Capri Sandals

I had the privilege of stepping into this world when I visited Capri and Positano for the first time a few decades ago. Discovering the art of Italian sandal making and these beautiful handmade sandals was nothing short of magical. Watching artisans skillfully craft each pair from the softest Italian leather, adding just the right embellishments, was a revelation. Every stitch, every curve, and every detail spoke of centuries of tradition—a harmonious blend of beauty and functionality.

The process is rooted in an unmatched dedication to craftsmanship, with the kind of attention to detail that has defined Italy’s artisanal products for generations. Each sandal felt like a work of art, designed not only to be worn but to be cherished. What struck me most was how personal the experience was—each pair is custom-made for one person, perfectly tailored in style and fit to their individual preferences and needs. The artisans worked with their hands, measuring, shaping, and adjusting each element with care, making every pair feel unique and alive.

Walking away with my first pair of Capri sandals felt like carrying a piece of history, a beautifully crafted story that connected me to a tradition far greater than myself. Even today, I feel that same sense of wonder whenever I make or slip on a pair of these sandals. It’s more than just making and wearing shoes—it’s stepping into a legacy of timeless design and unparalleled craftsmanship.

Back to the 1960s: Capri’s Jet-Set Era

But long before my discovery of these exquisite sandals, they had already made their mark on the world stage. In the 1960s, Capri became a glamorous hotspot for the international jet set, attracting some of the world’s most admired figures. Among them were icons like Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, and Jackie Onassis. Jackie Onassis, in particular, is famously remembered for her late-night shopping spree at Canfora, one of Capri’s oldest and most renowned sandal boutiques. Renowned for her impeccable style, she commissioned custom-made sandals that became a staple of her Mediterranean wardrobe.

To this day, her signature style, known as "The K," can still be purchased at Canfora—a true testament to timeless style and elegance. The same is true for Capri sandals in general, which are still made using the same traditional Italian sandal making methods. Crafted from exquisite Italian leathers by the skilful hands of local artisans, each pair tells a story—a story of heritage, passion, and artistry passed down through generations.

These sandals are more than just luxury footwear; they are a reflection of the culture and craftsmanship of the Amalfi Coast. Capri sandals have stood the test of time, beloved by modern travellers and celebrities alike, remaining true classics that never go out of fashion.
